Baby Smothers When Pillows Fall on Head (April 1, 1936)
The act of a playing youngster, who knocked pillows off the end of a couch to allow them to fall over the head of a baby sister, sleeping in a crib at the end of the couch, is blamed for the suffocation yesterday afternoon of an infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Max Johns of north of Creston.
The mother left her two daughters, one 13 months old and the other less than three months old, in the farm home, about two and one half miles north of Creston, as she went out into the yard to hang out clothes to dry.
The older child, Janice Lee, is just old enough to walk a trifle and she presumable grabbed at the pillows piled on the end of a couch as she played near the baby’s crib.
In the yard, but 15 or 20 minutes before returning to gain assurance that her children were safe, the mother found the baby smothered by the weight of the pillows.
Funeral services will be at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in McGregor Brothers and Coens’ chapel here. Burial will be made in Graceland cemetery.
Patricia Ann Johns was born Jan. 2, 1936. In addition to the mother and father and 13 month old sister, the grandparents survive; Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Moon of 801 East Montgomery street and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Johns of 305 North Cedar street.
