Obituary from Powers Funeral Home Afton

Mildred Ripperger, 92 of Ankeny, formerly of Afton, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the Sunny View Care Center in Ankeny. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton. Fr. Ken Halbur will officiate. Burial will be at the St. Edwards Cemetery, west of Afton. Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and a 7:30 p.m. Christian Wake Service, all at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Memorials may be directed to the family of Mildred Ripperger. Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com.

Mildred Veronica (Dittmer) Ripperger, daughter of Frank Joseph Dittmer and Rose Catherine (Schurman) Dittmer, was born August 28, 1920 in Warren County, Iowa She was educated in Rosemount Catholic School in Warren County. On April 27, 1946, Mildred married Giles Ripperger in Afton, Ia. They lived most of their life in the Afton area. Mildred was a homemaker and also worked in Murray early on, then at the Afton Care Center. She later retired. They moved away in 2000. Giles passed away in May of 2011. Mildred had been a member of the St. Edwards Catholic Church, the Altar Society. She was a former member of the Dodge Center Church Auxiliary. Mildred also loved to sew and garden.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia (husband John) Hart of St. Joseph, Mo., Linda (husband Mike) Landers of Des Moines and Sandy Konkler of Des Moines; a brother Loren "Dick" (wife Ione) Dittmer of Des Moines; a sister Edna Baumgarten of Knoxville, Ia.; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a step-great-granddaughter and two step-great-great-grandchildren. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, husband Giles Ripperger, a daughter Mary Ellen Smith August of 2009, four brothers, Alfred, Paul, LaVerne and Lloyd "Slim" Dittmer and four sisters, Bertha Veach, Laura Ripperger, Florence Callen and Marjorie Baumgarten.
