OBITUARY

Died--At his late residence in Blue Springs, Neb., Thursday, Dec. 3, 1891, 12:04 A. M., J. S. Elliott, aged 66 years 3 months 29 days.

Funeral services at the M. E. Church sunday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m. conducted by Rev. Fowler of Blue Springs, and Rev. Vance of Wymore, assisted by Scott Post No. 37, G. A. R.

Mr. Elliott was a pioneer of Union county. He was at one time a merchant in Afton and was a prominent citizen in the early days of the county. His many friends will learn with regret of his death. One by one those who assisted in the development of this part of the State are passing away.

In Memoriam

Died--At his late residence in this city at 12:04 o'clock Thursday morning, December 3rd, 1891, of nervous prostration, Mr. J. S. Elliott, aged 66 years 2 months and 29 days.

Father Elliott as he was familliarly known by his large circle of friends, was born September 3rd, 1825 in Fleming county Kentucky. His father died while he was yet young and left a widowed mother with a family of three boys and three girls. At the age of twelve years he emigrated with his widowed mother from Kentucky to Owen county, Indiana where he moved onto a small farm in the timber and had to work hard to help support the family. He was married April 18th, 1847, to Miss Tirzah Jane Perrige, in Vandalia, Indiana. He emigrated from Indiana to Jasper county, Iowa in the fall of 1855 and lived on a farm for two years when he sold out and moved to Union county, Iowa. In the fall 1857 he went into the general merchandize business also that of buying and shipping stock and continued in this line of trade until the fall of 1862 when he responded to the call of his country for volunteers and enlisted as private in Co. H. 29th Iowa. He was out only a short time until he was promoted to the position of 2nd., lieutenant of his company which position he held until fall of '64 when owing to poor health he resigned [unreadable] and was under medical treatment [rest of obit missing]
