Obituaries Powers Funeral Home

Maxine Kaster, 93, of Afton, passed away Saturday, April 28, 2012 at the Afton Care Center in Afton.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the United Methodist Church in Afton. Pastor Joel Sutton and Pastor Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery, east of Afton.

Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Mon., with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Mon. at the Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge in Afton. Memorials may be directed to the Afton United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com.

Gustava Maxine (Tisue) Kaster, daughter of Gus Clyde Tisue and Leah Frances (Clark) Tisue, was born June 1, 1918 in Moravia, Ia. She graduated from Moravia High School and went on to study for a year at a business college. Maxine then worked at the Centerville State Bank in Centerville, Ia.

On Dec. 31, 1937, Maxine married Leo C. Kaster in Grant City, Mo. They settled in Afton, and co-owned and operated the Afton Star-Enterprise Newspaper in Afton, until selling it to their daughter, Donna Haight in June of 1980. She continued at the newspaper with Donna and later, David Pugh, finishing in 2002. Maxine volunteered with the Afton Care Center, the Senior Meals at the Joy Building and the Union County Fair. Maxine was a member of the Afton United Methodist Church for 73 years, where she taught Sunday School for varied ages for 60 years. She was formerly a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Afton Community Club, was a 4-H and Cub Scout leader and a charter member of the Wesleyan Service Guild.

Survivors include three daughters, Karen (Ted) Crawford of Lorida, Fla. and Donna (Dean) Haight and Millie Skarda, both of Afton; a son, Dennis (Marsha) Kaster of Rantoul, Ill.; two nephews and a niece they helped raise, Phil (Linda) Tisue of Knoxville, Tenn. and Roger (Anne) Tisue of Bettendorf, and Marcia (Richard) Jones of Shannon City; 12 grandchildren, Dena (Reggie) Wheeler, Randy (Becky) Haight, Jeff (Scott Strand) Haight, Vince (Gretchen) Haight, Wes (Marjie) Skarda, Dawn (Gene) Christensen, Dustin (Tinley) Kaster, Karli (Ryan) Slocum, Gay Ann (Ed) Mooney, Denise (Gordon) Dickinson, Melanie Eiland and Suzanne Crawford; 23 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ronald (Charlotte) Tisue of Moravia, Ia.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leo in 1995; son-in-law, Gary Skarda in 2007; a grandson, Jonas Vanderley; a sister, Hallien Stover; and a brother, Eugene Tisue.
