Obituaries Powers Funeral Home

Esther L. Fluckey, 89, of Afton, died Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston, Ia.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2012 at the Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge in Afton. Pastor Lila Greene will officiate.

Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, east of Afton.

Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wed., with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wed. at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Shannon City Community Church or the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston. Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com.

Esther Lavonna Dobson, daughter of Charles Dobson and Lillian (Lathrop) Dobson, was born Nov. 12, 1922 in Athelstan, Ia. She graduated from Arispe High School.

On Sept. 28, 1940, Esther married Lyle Adam Fluckey in Mt. Ayr, Ia. They moved to the Arispe area in 1942, where they have continued to live for the next 70 years. Esther was a farmwife and homemaker. They retired from farming in 1980. Esther was a great seamstress and made a lot of the clothing for the kids. She also loved to play the piano and sing. Esther was a member of the Shannon City Community Church and the Stitch and Chatter Club.

Survivors include her husband, Lyle Fluckey of Afton; three daughters, Janice (husband Gary) Matson of Cedar Rapids, Ia., Sharon (husband Red) Cox of West Des Moines, Ia. and Carolyn Bollman of Creston; a son, Leslie (wife Hayley) Fluckey of Algonquin, Ill.; six grandchildren, Melissa Stenberg, Mike and Mark Matson, Erin Bollman, and Jason and Shawn Fluckey; 8 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Harmer of Carlisle, Ia., and many other family and friends.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Vivian Wilson.
