Obituaries Powers Funeral Home

Henry Benedict, 79, of Thayer, died Friday, January 11, 2013 at his home near Thayer. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston at the junction of highways 25 and 34. Pastor Edgar Henry Benedict will officiate. Burial will be in the Beulah Cemetery near Thayer. Military rites will be done by the John B. Parks VFW Post #8882 of Afton. Family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Monday at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Memorials may be made to the family, Greater Regional Ambulance Services or Afton First Responders. Henry L. Benedict was born October 3, 1933 in Thayer, Iowa to Mary Hannah (Wright) and Alexander Newton Benedict. He graduated from Lorimor High School graduating in 1952. Henry served his nation in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1955-1961. Henry was united in marriage on October 9, 1960 in Greenfield to Rita Marie Chivers. He farmed in the Winterset, Earlham and Redfield area. While living in Redfield he also worked for Oscar Mayer in Perry. In 1990 they moved to rural Thayer and continued farming where he currently resided.

Henry is survived by three sons, Lawrence (wife Tamara) Benedict of Perry, Edgar Benedict of Dawson and Roger (wife Kathy) Benedict of Thayer; five daughters, Martha (husband Keith) Crandall of Norwalk, Carol (husband John) Cain of Lorimor, Dawn (husband Roger) Ross of Redfield, Cindy Benedict of Thayer and Kristy (husband Jason) Somsky of Des Moines; two step sons, David Henthorne of Blair, Wisc. and Tom (wife Sue) Henthorne of Alma, Wisc.,step son in-law, Ken Crivits of Taylor, Wisc.; brother, Carl (wife Rose) Benedict of Redfield; two sisters, Mary Borst of Redfield and Elizabeth Blunt of Mannly, Neb.; 41 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rita Benedict in 2002; son, Darrell Henthorne; daughter, Linda Crivits; three brothers, Delbert, Ralph and Everett Benedict; two sister, Nina Craig and Ona Craig; and two nephews, Stephen Harrison and Clifford Benedict.
