Gladys Fern Carey, daughter of John and Mary (Simmons) Welling, was born June 16, 1912, in Union County, youngest of five children.

She was married to Clarence E Carey at Valley Junction (now known as West Des Moines) on August 27, 1934. To this union were born 3 daughters, Mary Janetta, Frances Joann and Carolyn Jolene. They lived on a farm in Dodge Township for 20 years. In 1955 they sold the farm and moved to Des Moines, IA.

Clarence and Gladys were Foster Parents for the State of Iowa and cared for over 30 children.

Clarence passed away February 1972.

In 1973 Gladys and Carolyn moved to Knoxville, TN. Gladys had lived in Dayton since 1995 and was a homemaker. She was a volunteer missionary with Cedine Bible Camp and attended Grace Bible Church.

Funeral services for Gladys will be held Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Vanderwall Funeral Home in Dayton, Tenn. Dr. Doug Russell and the Rev. John Fields to officiate the service.

Memorials may be directed to Cedine Bible Camp in Spring City. Tenn.

She is survived by her three daughters, Mary Carey and Frances Carey of Dayton, TN and Carolyn (Walt) Reardon of Biloxi, Miss.; two grandsons, James T & Joseph S. Reardon.

Graveside services will be Friday, July 21, at 10 a.m. in Groesbeck cemetery, where she will be laid to rest beside her husband.
