The Enterprise Afton, Iowa, March 1st, 1888

Mercy B. Groesbeck was born March 13, 1802, in Oneida county, N. Y. She moved to Portage county, Ohio, in 1818; was married in 1821 to Garrett L. Groesbeck. They moved to Lee county, Iowa, in 1828, and came to this county in 1854, where she has since resided with her son Wm. Groesbeck.

She departed this life Feb. 25, 1888 at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. She had been a member of the Methodist church for over sixty years, at all times exhibiting a Christian spirit and being an example of piety. But a short time before her death, she requested her son Henry to read to her from the Bible, the book she loved so well, and sing that old familiar hymn, "On Jordan's stormy banks I stand." She had lived the life of a Christian, and death had no terrors for her. May God grant that we may follow the example of her piety and at last meet her in Heaven.

The funeral services were held at her home on Monday, Feb. 27, where a large concourse of friends gathered to pay their last respects to our departed friend. The services were conducted by Reverend Nixon of Afton, from Fourth chapter First Thessalonians, commencing at 18th and ending at 18th verse. He delivered a fine discourse, full of sympathy and comfort to the friends, after which the remains were taken to the Groesbeck cemetery, where the last respects were paid to the departed one.

Post note: Mother of Adelia Lambert, Henry B., William, Amelia Clauson, Benjamin, Harriet Peters, Dan Van Ness, Cordelia Allen Ball.
