C.M. DUTCHER, 94, DIES HERE

Suffers Stroke While in Courtroom

Charles M. Dutcher, 94, Civil War veteran and former Arispe postmaster, died at his home, 612 North Birch street, at 5:30 this morning as the result of a stroke he suffered yesterday afternoon while in the district courtroom here.

Under an order of the court, he had come to the courtroom to to give his testimony in the suit he had brought against C.O. and Cora Hudson to collect on a $1,000 note.
He suffered the stroke before he could be sworn in to give his testimony in the case. He was treated by a doctor at the courtroom and was taken to his home in an ambulance.

Served 3 Years in War

Mr. Dutcher had been a resident of Union County since 1895 when he moved to Arispe. He spent most of the time in this county as a resident in or near Arispe, moving to Creston in October, 1933.

Before moving to Arispe, he was a resident of Griswold and Briscoe, Ia. He was once postmaster at Briscoe and later served as postmaster at Arispe. He was a member of the I.O.O.F lodge at Shannon City.

Mr. Dutcher served nearly three years in the Union army during the Civil War. He was with the Ninth Kansas Cavalry, Company D, from Sept. 1, 1862, until he received his honorable discharge on June 24, 1865.

Born at Chicago

He was born at Chicago, Ill., April 10, 1840, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Dutcher. He was married to Ruth A. Taylor at Chanute, Kan., Oct. 24, 1861. Mrs. Dutcher preceded him in death Aug. 30, 1932 at Arispe.

He is survived by nine children, Eva Mackrill of Red Oak; Clara Givens of Corning; Mary E. White of Denver; Minnie Shields of Cutknife, Sask., Canada; Jennie Stoddard of Shell Rock, Ia; Jessie Wilson of Red Oak; John T. Dutcher of Des Moines; Cora Hudson of Arispe; and Guy Dutcher of Red Oak. One son, Charles, died in 1926. A half sister, Mrs. Ada Butts, lives in Oregon.

Funeral arrangements have not been made. Burial, however, will be in Greenlawn cemetery st Afton.
