Owens dead at 99

Irvin Ross Owens, 99, of Deadwood, S.D., died at a Deadwood nursing home Jan. 24.

Owens homesteaded at Rozet and lived many years in the area.

Owens was born April 24, 1879, at Afton, Iowa, to Phillip and Launna Owens. He attended school in Iowa.

In 1900 he married Anna Pearl Capps in Afton. They lived in Rozet after starting their homestead in 1916, and moved back to Iowa in 1936. In 1945 they moved to Deadwood.

Owens farmed in Wyoming and Iowa. He was caretaker for the Smith apartments in Deadwood for several years.

He was a member of the St. Ambrose Church. Owens was preceded in death by his wife in 1962, one daughter, one son, and two brothers. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Bert (Phyllis) Carter of Deadwood, four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Christian Wake Services with rosary were conducted Jan. 26 at Wells-Ruth Funeral Home in Deadwood.

Mass of the Christian burial was celebrated Saturday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood with Rev. Thomas Gorman officiating.

Burial was Saturday in Mt. Pisgah cemetery in Gillette.

A memorial has been established to St. Joseph Nursing Home in Deadwood.
