Lewis "Louie" Utterback, 85, of Creston, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2008, at his home in Creston. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2008, at the Powers Funeral Home, junction of Highways 34 and 25, Creston. Pastor Dan Moore will officiate. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday, with family receiving friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Powers Funeral Home. Military graveside rites will be by the Theodore J. Martens Post #1797, Creston, VFW. Online condolences may be made under the obituary category at www.powersfh.com.
Lewis Edward Utterback was born Janury 17, 1923, in Union County, Iowa to Sylvia Mae (Holcomb) and George Clair Utterback. Louie was raised by his grandparents, Ella and Ezra Utterback. He was educated in the Creston and Burlington schools. He worked at Midwest Biscuit Factory at Burlington until being drafted into the service on January 29,1943. He served in the U.S. Army with Company "C" 594th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. He took training at Fort Gordon Johnson in Florida, went to Fort Devens, Massachusets, and served at Miline Bay, Oro Bay, Buna, Lingayen Gulf, New Guinea, Manilla, and Tokyo. The men in the regiment stayed close after the war and kept in touch by telephone and letters. Husbands and wives enjoyed several reunions over the years at a variety of locations in the United States. After being discharged on January 4, 1946, Louie went to Sioux City Barber College, and after graduation, returned to Creston to work in Mel Oshel's Barber Shop which became "Utterback Barber Shop" in 1953. On June 23, 1951, Louie was united in marriage to Nelle Catherine Rundberg in Greenfield, Iowa. Louie barbered almost 59 years here in Creston and was proud of having worked on fathers and sons and their sons and loved seeing them grow over the generations. He retired on January 1, 2008. Louie was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and the Theodore J. Martens Post #1797, Creston VFW. Louie is survived by his wife, Nelle of Creston; one daughter, Debbie (Tom) Schieffer of Waukee; one son, Greg (fiancee, Tammy Fastenow ) of Kent; six grandchildren, Greg and Krista Schieffer; Catherine (Kole) Young; Jennifer Utterback; Steven and Jodie Fastenow; his sister, Vada Belle Butts of Burlington; sister-in-law, Doreen Taylor of Creston; nephew, Fred Taylor; and his cousin, Joy Swenson of Spokane, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents; Sylvia and George; grandparents, Ella and Ezra Utterback; one brother, Frank Taylor and his sister and brother-in-law, Nola and Herman Ball. Memorial contributions may be directed to Greater Regional Home Care and Hospice of Creston, Iowa.
