"Dr. William Berry,71,dies of heart attack

Practiced in Omaha 45 years; Ill Only a Day

Dr. William Berry,71, one of the oldest physicians in this section of the country in years of practice, died suddenly Sunday morning at his home, 3820 South Twenty-sixth street after a heart attack. He had practiced in Omaha for 45 years.

He was apparently in the best of health until Saturday night, when he complained of a pain in his heart according to members of his family. He refused to allow them to call a doctor.

Dr. Berry maintained an office in South Omaha until 1927, when he moved to the Medical Arts building.

To South Omaha in 1888

Dr. Berry was born in Burlington, Ia., where he received his early education. He graduated from the Startling Medical college at Columbus, O., in 1888. This college later merged with another to form the medical department of Ohio State university.

His first practice was in Union county, Iowa, and in May, 1888, he came to South Omaha. He later took post-graduate work in the Chicago Post-Graduate school, New York University, and Grat Ormond college in London.

A Prominent Mason

He attained the thirty-second degree of the Scottish Rite, and belonged to Tangier temple of the Shrine.

He was a member of the Omaha-Douglas County Medical society, the American Medical association, and the Nebraska and Iowa Pediatric society.

Dr. Berry had attempted to enlist in the medical corps during the world war but was rejected because he was beyond the age limit.

To his friends, Dr. Berry often had said he wanted to die with his boots on and not after a lingering illness.

Surviving are his widow, Augusta; two sons, W. Mahns, Sidney, Neb., and James, Minneapolis; two daughters, Miss Doris and Mrs. Marie Bredbeck, both of Omaha; a brother, James D., Long Beach, Cal., three sisters, Mrs. Kate Brown, Shannon City, Ia., Mrs. Margaret Scherer, San Gabriel, Cal., and Mrs. Mary McFarland, Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 4pm Tuesday from Wheeler Memorial church...Cremation will be at Forest Lawn."
