Afton Star Enterprise--August 1960

Franklin Herman Groesbeck, son of Sarah Fenner and Dan Van Ness Groesbeck was born near Afton, Iowa, August 5, 1871 and passed away August 1, 1960, at the Madison County Hospital, Winterset, Iowa. Except for about two years spent in North Dakota, he lived all his life within a few miles of the farm where he was born.

He attended the rural schools near his home and graduated from the Afton Business College.

On February 14, 1906 he was married to Esther Lenore Schneider. To this happy union were born four children.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1930, one son, Lewis in 1908, a sister, Mrs. Louise Norin, one brother Ben Groesbeck, and a grandson, David Bethune in April, 1960

He is survived by one brother, Arthur Groesbeck of Afton, Iowa, one son George of Lorimor, Iowa, two daughters: Mrs. Ada Bethune of Afton, Iowa and Mrs. Sarah Hass of Fort Madison, Iowa; and 9 grandchildren.

He was a faithful member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church from young manhood. He served as deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher for many years.

He was always ready to serve his family and those who needed him. He was a faithful, kind and devoted father and a patient and adoring grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him.

funeral services were held Thursday, August 4, at the Emmanuel Baptist church with the pastor, Rev. Lee Kivett in charge. Clarence Stalcup sang "Wonderful Words of Life", "Sunrise" and "Rock of Ages". He was accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Carl Huss.

Casket bearers were: Ray Boyack, Stanley Ritter, Bryan Stalcup, Harold Harris, Wm. Boyack, and Truman Comer. Burial was in the Groesbeck Cemetery norhteast of Afton.
