Helen Scherer, 82, of RR1, Afton, died Friday at the Afton Care Center.

Services were 10:30 a.m. today at the Keating-Lindsay Funeral Home here. The Rev. Lyle Kuehl, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiated with burial in Graceland Cemetery here. Music was provided by Jean Schmoll, organist, and Don Wilson, vocalist.

Scherer was born was born Feb. 27, 1903, in Madison County near Pitzer to Lewis L. and Margaret (McKee) Choate. She married Arthur J. Scherer Sept. 15, 1928, at Grant City, Mo. He preceded her in death on Jan.25, 1963. She moved from Madison County to Union County with her family in March 1912 and lived the remainder of her life in Union County. She graduated from Creston High School in 1922 and was a rural school teacher for seven years. She was a homemaker, member of the Hill of Zion Church, Creston VFW Post 1797 Auxiliary and Mixers Card Club.

Survivors includes three sisters, Mrs. Wilma Maynes of Lenoz, Gladys (Mrs. Glenn) Pettigrew of Afton and Margaret (Mrs. Joe) Gadard of Great Falls, Mont.; a brother, Fred (wife Leone) Choate of Conrad, Mont.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Pallbearers were Ron Hardin, Keith Kinkade, Les Pierce, Mark Ripperger, Dan Shannon and Paul Tyler.
