Russell Wayne Oakes, 62, of Hartford, formerly of the Afton area, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 28, 2007 at the Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge Afton. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery of Afton. Open visitation 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Memorials are to the family. Online condolences may be given under the obituary category at www.powersfh.com.

Russell Wayne Oakes was born October 17, 1944 in Creston to Juanita Mildred (Smith) and Russell Vernon Oakes. He graduated from East Union High School in 1962. On August 31, 1968 Wayne was united in marriage to Marlene Terry. They later divorced. Wayne lived in Des Moines where he worked for Bell Telephone before entering the Army. While in the Army he was a Radar Tech and a marksmen Expert. He then returned to Des Moines and worked for Bell Telephone, Highland and City Supply, doing maintenance and delivery for a Plumbing and Heating co. Wayne served as Past President of Harford Sportsmen Club.

Survivors include his parents: Russell and Juanita Oakes of Afton; one daughter: Teresa Oakes (husband Jeff) Dykstra of Des Moines; two sisters: Charlene (husband Mark) Hoffman of Shannon City; Jeanette Oakes of Winterset and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by both grandparents; Aunts, Uncles and several cousins.
