Leon E. Oakes, 88, of 1007 N. Sycamore, Creston, passed away, Tuesday evening, December 29, 1983, at Crest Haven Care Center.

Mr. Oakes was born August 23, 1895, in Union county, west of Arispe, the son of Willis G. and Ida (Armstrong) Oakes. He was married to Ruth Donner in Creston. She preceded him in death in May 1954.

Mr Oakes was a retired farmer and a lifetime resident of Union county, having moved to Creston in 1971.

He is survived by two sons, Cecil Oakes of Creston and Russell Oakes of Shannon City; three grandchildren; a great granddaughter; three sisters, Mrs Queenie Pipp and Mrs. Clara Peppmeier of Des Moines and Mrs. Bessie Field of Foster City, California.

In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is preceded in death by and infant son, Gerald; his parents, four sisters and a brother.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Stroud-Linsay Funeral Home at Afton. Rev. Mark Koenig, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Shannon City, officiated. Burial was at the Greenlawn Cemetery at Afton.

A memorial fund has been established.
