Mary Kay Smith
Mary Kathryn Smith, age 91, of Newark, DE, formerly of Lakeland, FL and Mt. Pleasant, MI, died Sunday, November 30, 2008.
Mary Kay was born July 9, 1917 in Chicago, IL, to William R. and Regina Patton Williamson and was raised in Creston, IA. On August 18, 1943, she married Lawrence J. Smith of Richwood, WV at St. Malachy's Church in Creston. He preceded her in death on January 24,1993. She graduated from Creston Junior College and took numerous courses at Central Michigan University, where her husand taught from 1951 to 1981. In 1986 they moved to Lakeland, FL where she lived until relocating to Delaware in 1996 to be near her daughter and family. While in Lakeland she volunteered many hours at the Lakeland Public Library and the Polk Museum of Art.
Mary Kay is survived by her children, Katie, wife of Robert Iko of Taos, NM; Deborah, wife of Hugh Henderson of Newark, DE; and Gavin, husband of Mary Mertz-Smith of Haslett, MI; grandchildren, Christopher Francis of Pittsburgh, PA; Robert Lawrence Henderson and Kathleen Regina Henderson of Newark, DE; and sister-in-law Sister Mary Clare Smith of Wheeling, WV. She was predeceased by her brother, William Robert Williamson, and a son Ryan Smith.
Cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held with Fr. William J. Klapps officiating. Graveside committal services will be held at the family's convenience in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Vitas Hospice Charitable Fund, 100 Commerce Drive, Ste.302,Newark, DE 19713.
