“Adams County Union-Republican” (Corning, Iowa).
October 30, 1901 (Wednesday). Page 3, Column 3 in the “Union” column:

“Death has entered our midst once more and removed Grandma Hitchcock from this life to the life beyond, Friday morning, October 25, 1901, aged 84 years, 1 month and 11 days, after an illness of nearly a year’s duration. Catherine Phelps was born in Paris, N. Y., Sept. 14, 1817, and was married to Samuel Hitchcock at Galesburg, Ill., January 15, 1840, living together nearly 60 years as her husband preceded her a year ago the first of October, and so they are re-united again. Four children were born to them, one daughter and three sons, the daughter dying at the age of 13 and two sons at the age of 18 and 22, leaving the first born, Lucius, as the stay and support of the declining years of both father and mother. The deceased, with her family, moved to Iowa twenty years ago last March, since which time she has lived on the farm, four and a half miles north of Cromwell. The deceased became a Christian in girlhood and lived a consistent life, being a member of the Congregational church, and was an example in the home, community and church. “Through much suffering she has entered into the rest that remaineth unto the people of God.” We should not mourn but rejoice that she rests from her labors and receives a crown of glory. The funeral was held at the house on Saturday [October 26] at 2 o’clock and the remains were laid by the side of her husband in the Cromwell cemetery. Three songs were rendered by a quartet consisting of Rev. L. E. Potter, W. S. Mills, Misses Fairy Sparr and Frances Harrison, Miss Lora Russell being the organist. The selections were “It is well with my soul,” “Shall we meet beyond the river,” and “Rest in Jesus,” or “Goodnight.” Rev L. E. Potter conducted the services, the text being “For so he giveth his beloved sleep,” Psalms 127:2, the last clause. The pall bearers were G. R. Sheets, J. H. Ours, W. H. Kiddoo, R. Colbert, Jacob Balius and George Ridgeway. There were several floral offerings. Those who attended the funeral from abroad were Mrs. A Z. Haynes, a sister-in-law, from Creston; Sam Hitchcock, a grandson, from Galesburg, Ill., where he is attending Knox college; C. H. Bacon and wife and Ed Grant and wife from Creston.” END
