"Henry Baker, familiarly known as Grandpa Baker, passed away to his home beyond on
Saturday evening, June 2, 1906, after a short illness, at the age of 89 years, 6 months, and 10
days. He was born in Princeton, Massachusetts, November 22, 1816, and in September, 1827,
moved with his parents to East Pharsalia, New York. In 1836 he went to Boston, making the
journey on horseback, where he spent a few years, returning to East Pharsalia, New York, in
1838, and then moving to Howell, Michigan, in 1854, where he made his home on a farm until
1875, when he and his family moved to Cromwell, Iowa, which place has since been his home.
On May 14, 1841, he was united in marriage to Nancy W. Herrick, at East Pharsalia, New York.
Three children were born to this union, one daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Wells, of Howell, Michigan, and two sons, Vestall A. Baker, of Petosky, Michigan, and Waldo P. Baker, of Cromwell, Iowa.
He was married the second time to S. Adelia Ketchum January 13, 1866, at East Pharsalia, New
York, who survives him. In 1839, he was appointed quarter master of the 191st regiment of New
York state infantry, in the militia during the time of peace and was afterwards promoted to
adjutant, lieutenant colonel and colonel of the same regiment. He united with the Congregational
church in East Pharsalia, New York, in early manhood and lived a faithful, consistent Christian life ever since, being a member of the Cromwell Congregational church at the time of his death.
Besides his wife and three children, eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, one brother and a host of friends and other relatives are left to mourn the loss of a loved one. The funeral was hold in the Congregational church Monday afternoon [June 4] at 2 o'clock and interment was made in the Cromwell cemetery. The choir composed of Mrs. M.W. Kiddoo and S.W. Helfenstine, of Creston, and Mrs. Frank Stevens and L. Hitchcock, with Miss Myrtle Kemp as organist, sang three songs, "Nearer My God to Thee," "Thy Will Be Done": and "Sweet By and By." Scripture reading and prayer by Rev. J. T. Bingaman, pastor of the M.E. church, and Rev. E.R. McCorkle, the pastor of the deceased, preached from the text "Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee." - Psalm 116:7. The floral offerings were numerous, the casket being covered with flowers. The pall-bearers were R. Colbert, W. H. Harrison, W.M. Sparr, M.L. Maxwell and J.H. Ours, of Creston. The following attended the funeral from abroad:
Henry H. Baker, of Ottumwa, a grandson of the deceased; Paul Russell and family, from near
Kent; James Buxton and wife, T.S.H. Dougherty and wife and J.H. Ours, from Creston, and J.S.
Randolph, from Corning.

The relatives wish to thank the many friends for their kindness during the sickness and
death of their husband and father, Henry Baker." END

"The many friends of Grandpa Baker were sorry to learn of his death, in Cromwell Saturday evening. He was a good man, reminding one of the prophets of old, so saintly was his life. Truly it was enough and he has been called up higher. The relatives have the sympathy of all." END
