“Lucius Hitchcock passed away Monday morning, June 27th, at 1 o’clock in the Greater Community hospital in Creston, where he underwent an operation Friday. He had been in poor health all the spring but has been able to be around most of the time.

Lucius Hitchcock was born in Galesburg, Ill., March 31, 1844. His parents were Samuel and Catherine Hitchcock, who came from the New England states in an early day and settled in Galesburg, Ill., and helped found Knox college. Mr. Hitchcock Jr., was married to Abbie Clapp, at Mendota, Ill., Oct. 13, 1866. Ten children were born to this union, four of whom are dead, two dying in infancy one daughter, Kate, and one son, Allen. The six living children are:
Mrs. Fannie Widger, Cromwell; Mrs. Jennie McPherren, Nelson, Neb.; Rev. Sam Hitchcock, Williston, N.D., Frank Hitchcock, near Pittsburg [Franklin], Pa., Mrs. May Campbell, Ord, Nebr.; Miss Edith Hitchcock, at home. Mr. Hitchcock and family, and his parents moved on a farm north of Cromwell, in the spring of 1881 and he has lived in this vicinity ever since, his home being 1 ˝ miles east of Cromwell. The senior Mr. and Mrs. Hitchcock passed away a number of years ago.

The deceased was a prominent member of the Congregational church during his residence here, he having been a member of the choir for a number of years, a trustee of the church for a number of years and for the past few years has been senior deacon. A good christian man has gone to his reward. While he has not left much property in this world, yet, he has left a good heritage to his children and grandchildren and the community in his christian living.

He leaves besides his wife and 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and a host of friends. No arrangements will be made for the funeral until they hear from the children away from here. The relatives have the sympathy of the community.” END

Just above the obituary in the same issue is the following:
“Rev. Sam Hitchcock, from Williston, N. Dak., came Saturday morning called here by the serious illness of his father, Lucius Hitchcock, who underwent on [sic] operation Friday morning in the Greater Community hospital, in Creston.”
