GRACELAND CEM—SAM. D. HARSH
Afton Enterprise
March 9, 1893SAM D. HARSH
The death of Sam. D. Harsh, editor and proprietor of the Creston Gazette, occurred Friday evening. It was the result of a lung disease that began two years ago. At that time he was compelled to relinquish his position as secretary of the republican county central committee. A long and serious illness followed from which he rallied sufficiently to travel for his health. He returned apparently much improved and his friends ardently hoped to see him restored to perfect health. During the past winter he suffered a relapse and the sad event of Friday was the result.
Sam. D. Harsh was the son of Senator and Mrs. J. B. Harsh. He was scarcely twenty-three years of age, yet, by his death, all who knew him realize that the services of one of our brightest young men are lost to his country. His death deprives the family of one whose career would have been their pride; robs the journalistic profession of a mind, young as it was, able to judge men and measures in the clearest and most comprehensive manner, and capable of putting thoughts into clear, forcible and convincing language; and last, his party mourns the death of a partisan of firm belief in the great future of the American nation, one who held a high and patriotic regard for just principles and correct legislation, and who had the courage to stand firmly by what he considered right.
With these splendid qualities were united modesty and cordiality. In his personal intercourse he made friends of all who came to know him. It is from the class of men to which Sam. Harsh belonged that the highest positions are filled. He is most sincerely mourned.
The funeral was held at the family residence in Creston on Sunday and the assemblage of personages who came to pay their last tribute of respect to the remains sufficiently attested the high esteem to which he was held by all.To Senator Harsh and family are extended the tenderest sympathy, not only of the community in which they live, but from all classes and beliefs over the sate on sentiment is only expressed---that of the deepest admiration for the noble qualities of their gifted son and regret that one so young should be compelled to renounce life and its promises, which in this case appeared so high, for the silence of the tomb. It appears ever thus. Those whom their country need are called away and gloomy hearts can only look to a Supreme Being for light and guidance.
