Former Resident Dead

The remains of David Arnold, former resident of this community, was brought to Afton last Sunday and laid to rest in Greenlawn cemetery, the Masonic lodge here conducting the service. A number of relatives accompanied the body here.

David Arnold was born in Muskingham, Ohio, August 26, 1824 and died after an eight week illness, at 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 25, 1923, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Lee in Des Moines, with whom he has resided for the past 24 years. He had attained the great age of 98 years, 9 months and 9 days.

Born of sturdy New England parents, the Arnold family were noted for their industry and long life. His mother died at the age of 98, his grandmother 102 and two sisters, Lucy and Lavina, at 97 and 98. He was one of eleven children.

David Arnold belonged to the Immanuel Baptist church, which was built on his farm north of Afton. He was raised to the sublime degree of a Mater Mason in Malta Lodge No. 118 in Ohio, Dr. Jennings was Worshipful Master, in the year 1845, making him a member of that organization for 77 years, a record which will be hard to excell in the United States. He was admitted to Afton Lodge in 1870 and was a member here for 20 years.

Mr. Arnold was a pioneer of Iowa, coming from Ohio in 1848, settling in Afton in 1855. He was married twice and to these unions eleven children were born. There are left to mourn his departure his wife, a son Edward and daughter Mrs. Hose of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Henry Hushaw, of Fowler, Colo., and Mrs. Frank Lee of Des Moines.

His faith in the Lord and His promises were very great and he was ready for the Master’s call.
