1885 Iowa State Census has him in Taylor County.
Simmons, Charles W, 74, farmer, b. NY, living in household of Devillo and Emma White.

Simmons, C.W., estate #534. SWD 05 Oct 1888, SWD 21 Dec 1888 I could check for this estate next week at the courthouse. This would likely name heirs and their locations, and probably give a date of death.

G W is likely an error, I should be able to get a photo for you too.
Simmons, Barbara wife of G.W., died Jan 10, 1879 ae 70y 11m 20d Bedford cem

1880 census has Charles in Bedford, living with his daughter, Emma, then not yet married. It has his parents b. in Ma
