Ruth Maxine Wilkinson Vesely Popelka
1914-1984Services for Ruth Vesely Popelka, 70, of Toledo, formerly of Vining, were held Friday, Sept. 7, at the Clutier Community Church with the Rev. Steve Riley officiating. Burial was in National Cemetery, Vining. She died Tuesday, Sept. 4, at her home in Toledo.
She was born May 2, 1914, at Chelsea, daughter of Ray and Barbara Tesar Wilkinson. Her mother died when she was quite young, and she was raised by her father and stepmother, Hazel Walker Wilkinson. She received her education at Chelsea and graduated from high school there.
On Sept. 18 1935, Ruth married Richard Vesely, and they made their home in Vining all of their married life. After Richards death on May 30, 1967, Ruth continued to make her home in Vining. She was married there on March 2, 1974, to John Popelka. Ruth and John made their home in Toledo.
She was a member of the Vining Congregational Church and Phoebe Fellowship.
Casket bearers were Tim Evans, Scott Yuska, Jeff Chitty, Nick Rohach, John Chitty, Matthew Hardon and Matthew Popelka. On the flower committee were Stella Jesina and Barbara Zeman. Organist was Luella Hora.
Survivors include her husband, John, of Toledo; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Sharon) Yuska of Toledo, Mrs. Larry (Sandra) Sheda of Traer, and Mrs. Richard (Sue) Hardon of Wichita Falls, Texas; one stepson, Donald Popelka of Yuma, Colo.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Joyce Chitty of Red Wing, Minn., Mrs. Diane Pohlman of Minden, and Mrs. Marcia Allen of Marshalltown; one brother, Ray Wilkinson of Lobelville, Tenn.; as well as 20 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Gertrude Seidel. Overton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. [Posted on the Tama County Rootsweb Message Board, Nov 26, 2000, by Steven Stodola]
