Dostal Boy, 9, Suffocates in Farm Accident
Thomas William Dostal, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Dostal of rural Clutier, was suffocated in a farm accident early Friday evening, Sept. 17.
Dostal and his son were unloading shelled corn from a wagon into an elevator leading to an overhead bin on one of Dostal’s farms.
Mr. Dostal was up in the bin. The boy was down below with the wagon. Mr. Dostal didn’t see his son fall, but apparently the boy slipped unto the corn in the self-unloading wagon and was sucked to the bottom. When the father came down, he saw the boy’s hand sticking out of the corn. He tried to pull him out but couldn’t.

Mr. Dostal dumped the corn, but the boy was dead of suffocation.
Revival attempts by the Clutier rescue personnel failed. Dr. G. M. Dalbey, Traer, deputy Tama county medical examiner was summoned to the scene.
Thomas William, son of Leonard and Mary Ann Wacha Dostal, was born in Marshalltown Feb. 3, 1962. He spent his entire life on a farm, 2 1/2 miles north of Clutier, and was a fourth grade pupil in the Clutier elementary school.
Tom was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic church, the K.D. Lodge of Clutier, a member of the Pee Wee baseball team and was an avid swimmer.
Survivors include his parents, two brothers, Loren and Jeffrey, two sisters, JoAnn and Barbara, maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Wacha, Toledo, and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Dostal, Tama, and several more distant relatives.
The rosary was recited from the Mason-Hand Funeral home, Tama, Sunday evening at 8:00 o’clock, led by the K.D. Lodge of Clutier. Susan Wacha and Darla Dostal were in charge of Mass cards.
The funeral Mass was celebrated in St. Wenceslaus Catholic church, rural Clutier, Monday morning at 10:00 o’clock, with Rev. F. J. Ruzicka, pastor, celebrant. Floral tributes were cared for by Lori Ewoldt, Cathy Hayek, Sharon Wacha and Lynne Kubik.
Casketbearers were Curt Dostal, Calvin Dostal, Douglas Wacha, Robert Lenhart, Mitchell Hushak and Timothy Svoboda. Burial was in St. Wenceslaus cemetery, rural Clutier. [Posted on Tama County Rootsweb Message Board, Aug 27, 2000, by Steven Stodola]
