TRAER - Funeral services for Robert E. Schrier, 82, of Traer, were held Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Traer. Burial was in Blessing Cemetery, rural Hudson.

Schrier died Monday, Dec. 31, 2007, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo following a brief illness.

Robert Eugene Schrier was born March 28, 1925, in Waterloo at St. Francis Hospital, son of Joseph M. and Kathryn Griffin Schrier. He was raised, lived and worked all of his life on the family farm northwest of Buckingham. He graduated from Traer High School with the Class of 1942.

Bob joined the US Marine Corps and 1943 and served as a tail gunner in a B-25 Mitchell bomber in WW II. He was honorably discharged with a rank of Sergeant in 1946.

He married Mercedes Rottinghaus on Sept. 30, 1947, at Immaculate Conception Church in Gilbertville. They worked together on the family farm and raised six children. In addition to farming Bob learned to fly on the GI Bill. He owned several planes, starting with a Piper Cub, was a long-time pilot, and worked summers crop dusting for Laverty Sprayers in Indianola for 17 years.

He was a member of the Quiet Birdmen. He also was a lifetime member of the Immaculate Conception (Blessing) Catholic Church, rural Hudson, and served as administrator of the Blessing Cemetery for 32 years. He was a member of the Kubik-Finch Post of the American Legion in Traer and the Knights of Columbus. He was a long-time member of the board of Buckingham Co-op, serving as president for several years. He worked the family farm until the day he entered the hospital. He enjoyed family history and traveling, including three trips to Ireland visiting his Boyle family relatives in County Donegal. He also enjoyed playing cards, reading and traveling to attend family events, especially those of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by two sons, Bill (Kathy) of Seattle, WA, and John (Martha) of Traer; four daughters, Barbara (Ron) Besch of Bellevue, Jane (Steve) Kock of Carroll, Mary (Terry) Otting of Columbus, OH; and Anne (Tom) Curley of Waunakee, WI; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother Jim (Joanne) of Hudson and sister Kathleen Farkas of Anchorage, Alaska, as well as a special friend Shirley Crawford of Traer.

Preceding him in death were his wife Mercedes, his parents and one grandson, Adam Otting.

Overton Funeral Home, Traer, was in charge of arrangements.
