Dr. Donald P. Hayes, 77, of Buckingham, died Saturday, October 17 at Allen Memorial Hospital following a heart attack. Dr. Hayes was born August 16, 1932 in Black Hawk County, IA, the son of Thomas and Henrietta Hinz Hayes. He graduated from Geneseo High School 1950; received his BA in Business Administration from the University of Iowa in 1960, his Masters in Business Economics from UNI and his PhD from the University of Iowa in Education in 1973.
Dr. Hayes held numerous teaching and administrative positions in Iowa schools in addition to farming near Buckingham. He also served in the US Army from 1952-1954. Dr. Hayes spoke at many seminars about humor and its impact on good health. He was an avid historian and genealogist.
Dr. Hayes is survived by two nephews: Thomas C. (Rhonda) Hayes of Waterloo and Craig S. Hayes of Minneapolis; 2 nieces Deborah J. (James) Hurst of Cedar Falls and Suzanne C. (James Jr.) Hanna of LaPorte City. He is also survived by two great nephews Jason Hanna of Boston and Tyler Hayes of Waterloo; and special friend Glenna Lebeda of Haslett, MI. He is preceded in death by a brother Carroll T. Hayes and Aunt Edna Hinz.
Internment will be at the Blessing Cemetry in Hudson, IA. Services: 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 23, 2009, St. Mary of Mount Carmel in Eagle Center, IA. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. on October 2, 2009 with a 7:30 p.m. Scripture Service at the Locke Funeral Home.
