TRAER – Marcella Howard, 91, of Traer, died Sunday, April 20, 2008 at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer after an extended illness.

Funeral services are Thursday, April 24, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at the Traer United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Rick Vesely officiating. Burial will be in Buckingham Cemetery at a later date.

Hazel Marcella Howard was born Nov. 6, 1916 at the family home in Geneseo Township near Dysart. She was the second child of Charles and Helen Ringle Wilkinson. Marcella was raised in Geneseo Township and attended school in Geneseo and Dysart. During her senior year she moved with her family to Garwin where she graduated in 1934. She then helped her parents in the hotel business in Garwin. She also assisted Mrs. Claude Mitchell with housekeeping and cooking for her family.

On Jan. 28, 1939, she was united in marriage to Gerald Howard at the Methodist parsonage in Maquoketa. Marcella and Gerald made their home on farms in the Traer and Geneseo area, later moving to a home in Traer, where she was secretary for Gerald’s Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company. In August of 2005 she became a resident of the Sunrise Hill Care Center.

Marcella loved her family, was a loving wife and mother, and her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She was a caregiver to all and enjoyed giving to others. She was a former member of the Geneseo and Traer Untied Methodist Churches and a current member of the United Presbyterian Church in Traer. She was an active member of her churches where she served as a Sunday school teacher and belonged to all the ladies groups and circles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald on March 29, 2007, one son Paul Howard, one grandson Cory Howard, a son-in-law Dennis Taylor, two sisters Betty Whitmore and Mary Miller and a brother Wayne Wilkinson.

She is survived by her daughter Kay Edleman and husband Gerald of Anamosa; a daughter-in-law Marcia Ketter and husband Robert of Traer; four grandchildren; Jeff (Brenda) Taylor, Kristy (Mark Fraser) Taylor, Todd (Alison Clausen) Howard and Jammie (Kimberly) Howard; five great grandchildren; Cody, Taylor, Amanda, Madison, and Sara brother and sister-in-law Wendell and Pauline Howard and a sister-in-law Mary Ann Howard all of Traer.

Overton Funeral Home in Traer was in charge of arrangements. Memorials can be made to a charity of choice or United Presbyterian Church, Geneseo United Methodist Church, Sunrise Hill Care Center or Amenity Hospice of Cedar Rapids.
