Ida E. Fleming, age 91, of Friendship Village, Waterloo, died Sunday, June 3, at Lakeview, Landing.
Ida was born on a farm near Dinsdale, IA, to James T. and Annie Frey Fleming on March 8, 1916. She was graduated from the Dinsdale Consolidated School in 1933. College education for Ida began at Iowa State Teachers’ College in Cedar Falls, now the University of Northern Iowa. She earned a BA Degree in Elementary Education in 1945. Graduate work for Ida was done at UNI, Central Missouri State University, University of Alaska, and the University of Hawaii.
Ida’s teaching career of 38 years began with 4 years spent in rural schools in Benton County, one year in the Dysart Consolidated School, followed by 33 years at Frances Grout Elementary School in the Waterloo Public Schools where she joined her two sisters who were already a part of the Waterloo system. The three Fleming sisters gave 99 years of teaching service to the Waterloo Schools and a total of 123 years of teaching in the field of education.
Ida belonged to the National, State, and Local Education Associations. Other memberships included Delta Kappa Gamma, Gamma Theta Upsilon honorary organizations. She was a member of Waterloo First Congregational Church since 1948.
Extensive travel experiences were enjoyed by the three sisters who all were social studies teachers for many years.
Ida is survived by sister-in-law Donna Fleming of Dysart; nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews. Preceding Ida in death were her parents, brother Ralph W. Fleming of LaPorte City, brother Clark O. Fleming of Osage, brother James W. Fleming of Dysart, sisters Edna and Laura Fleming of Waterloo.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 6, 2007, at Locke Funeral Home. Waterloo. Burial was at Buckingham Cemetery in Traer.
