TAMA-Richard Wayne Miller, age 79, of Tama was taken gently by God on Friday, January 4, 2008 at his daughter’s home in Grinnell under the care of his family and Amenity Hospice. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the Tama Assembly of God Church with Pastor Karen Norton officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 7 from 6 to 8 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Richard was born on April 22, 1928 in rural Jasper County, the son of Vernon Everett and Ida May (Grovenberg) Miller. He was the eighth of twelve children. He was raised in Poweshiek County and attended country schools. Richard married Joan Welch on April 11, 1959 in England. Richard served in the United States Air Force until 1972 at which time he retired on medical disability. Richard had many interests, which included restoring antique clocks and furniture, raising pigeons, hunting, reading civil war stories, and he started the Miller family tree history. Richard was a member of Tama Assembly of God Church, the DAV, and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son Roger; and six brothers, Walt, Harry, Adrian, Glenn, Raymond, and Jed Miller.
Survivors include his wife Joan of Tama; five daughters, Wanda (Tom) Jones of Lansing, IL, Joanne (Edward) Philbin of Newton, Debbie Miller of Grinnell, Susan (Dan) Lassiter of Smithland, KY, and Sharon (Doug) Allison of Grinnell; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters Audrey (Cal) Tyer of Polk City and Sis Taylor of Tama; three brothers Harold (Ruth) Miller of Marshalltown, Don (Dot) Miller of Tinley Park, IL, and Gene (Dorothy) Miller of Victor; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Amenity and Iowa River Hospice.
