Helen Mary Kopecky, age 94, of Cedar Rapids and formerly of Clutier, died on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 in Hallmar Care Center at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids due to a short illness. A Funeral Liturgy will be held Saturday, April 28, 2007 at 10:30 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clutier with Father Jerry Blake as celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in rural Clutier. Visitation will be held Friday, April 27, 2007 from 4-8 PM at Kruse-Phillips Clutier Chapel with a Scripture Service at 7 PM.
Helen M. Kopecky was born on July 30, 1912, in Clutier, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Mary (Vokoun) Hanus.
She attended the Clutier schools, graduating from High School in 1930. Helen then attended the State Teachers College in Cedar Falls before teaching at Oneida # 5 rural school, two miles east of Clutier, for five years.
She was married June 4, 1935 to William B. Kopecky in Immaculate Conception Church in Clutier and the couple spent their entire married life in Clutier.
Helen was a member of the I.C. Catholic Church and its Rosary Society, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, the American Legion Auxiliary, where she was a Charter member and Gold Star Sister. She was also active in the Clutier Senior Citizen’s group. In 1984, she was chosen one of Iowa’s “Merit Mothers” and for nearly sixty years served as a correspondent for seven newspapers. In 1982, she and her husband retired from a thirty-five year Catering Service. She also spent twenty-one years working in various positions in the Clutier school system, and after her retirement, she and her husband visited all fifty states.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, William in 1987; and invalid son, Donald in 1958; one sister, Agnes Luze; four brothers, Philip, Rudolph, Joseph, and Anton Jr; and a granddaughter, Kathleen Kopecky Deegan.
Survivors include two sons, Norman (Joyce) Kopecky of Guttenberg and Eugene (Sally) Kopecky of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Elaine Hanus of Sioux City.
A memorial fund has been established.
