Peggy Ann Shearer, age 84, of Des Moines died on Monday, May 7, 2007 in Windsor Manor in Grinnell due to a short illness. Graveside Services and interment will be Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 1:00 PM at the Masonic Cemetery in Montezuma with Rev. George Salnave presiding. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, May 17, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Westkirk Presbyterian Church in Urbandale with Rev. Michael Mudlaff officiating.
Peggy Ann Shearer was born on May 9, 1922, in Montezuma, the daughter of Earl and Margaret (Hutchinson) Shearer.
She graduated from Montezuma High School in 1939 and then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She then taught country school at Jackson Township #12 in Montezuma before joining the Marines. After her military service, she taught school in Tama while finishing her education at Drake University. After teaching one year in Long Beach, CA, she then taught in the Des Moines School District at the Hubbell School for thirty one and one half years until her retirement at the age of sixty-two.
Peggy was a life member of the Eastern Star LaFayette Chapter 232 and the Des Moines Women’s Club. She was also a member of the Des Moines American Legion, Des Moines retired Teacher’s Association and the Iowa Women’s Marine Corps. She loved to travel and organize trips and enjoyed music concerts of all kinds. Above all, she was very proud to have served her country during WWII in the U.S. Marines.
Preceding her in death were her parents; one infant sister, Frances; one brother, Marcus (Pauline) Shearer; and a close cousin, Marie Hutchinson Willett.
Survivors include two nieces; one nephew and several cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a Humane Society of your choice.
