OBITUARY

RUTH SPEIRS

Funeral services for Ruth E. Speirs, 72, of Traer, were held Tuesday, May 30, 1995, at the Amity Presbyterian Church rural Reinbeck with burial in Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer. She died Thursday, May 25, 1995, at her home in Traer following a sudden illness.

Officiating at the service was Pastor Laura Stellmon. Special music was provided by Nancy Mitchell.

Casket bearers were Bill Sager, Larry Sager, Jim Sager, Verlyn Sager, Art Johnson and Bill Saak. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Vest and Mr. and Mrs. David McMillan served on the flower committee.

Ruth E. Speirs was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Sullivan County in southern Indiana, the daughter of William and Emma (Zurheidi) Sager. She attended school at Pleasantville, Ind., where she graduated from high school. She then began working in a box factory and later when the war started, she worked in an airplane factory building war planes.

While on a trip to visit family in the Traer area she met and married Sandy Speirs on Jan. 1, 1949 at the Grace Brethren Church in Waterloo.

The couple made their home on a farm northwest of Traer where they raised their family.

In later years, Ruth completed a nurses training class in Traer and then worked for both nursing homes in town until her retirement.

Following Sandy's death, April 7, 1994, Ruth continued to make her home for a time on the farm until moving to an aparatment in Traer in July of that year.

Ruth was a member of the Amity Presbyterian Church, where she was active in various groups within the church.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Sandy, four brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by one son and his wife, Robert and Paula Speirs of Grundy Center; one daughter and her husband, Nancy and Art Calderwood of Traer; one brother, Nelson Sager of Reinbeck; and six grandchildren.

Overton Family Funeral Homes-Traer was in charge of arrangements.
