OBITUARY

ELIZABETH SHANDA

A Funeral Mass for Elizabeth T. Shanda, 88, of Traer, was celebrated Monday morning, April 6, 1998, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer with burial in the church cemetery.

Elizabeth died Thursday, April 2, 1998 at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer, where she had been a resident during recent months.

The funeral service was officiated by Father John Tilp. Catherine McLean served as organist and Larry Nachazel was volalist.

Casket bearers iincluded Bernard Novak, John Novak, Bernard Musel, Donald Novak, Paul Novak and Doug Pusteoska. Mass cards were handled by Katherine Babinat, Donna Richardson, Evelyn Rieser and Diana Sturtz. Flower committee members were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beecher and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Chizek.

Elizabeth T. Shanda was born Oct. 23, 1909, in Richland Township near Chelsea, the daughter of Anton and Mary (Polashek) Novak. At the age of 9, after the death of her mother, Elizabeth went to live with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Polashek.

She received her education at Helena Country School in Tama County.

At the age of 13 she went back home to live with her father and step-mother, Mary.

On Nov. 24, 1927, she was united in marriage to Joseph Shanda. Elizabeth and Joe made their home farming near Elberon and later near Clutier.

In December 1962 the couple moved to Traer to make their home. Following Joe's death April 26, 1982, Elizabeth continued to live and work in Traer and enjoyed spending time gardening, making quilts, upholstering, working outdoors and cleaning local offices.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Joseph; three brothers, Joseph, William and Frank; three sisters, Sister M. Sophia, Mary and Agnes; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters; Mrs. Edward (Rose) Babinat of Marshalltown and Mrs. Edward (Lillian) Ruzicka of Buckingham; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
