OBITUARY

FATHER JOHN M. PETERS

A Funeral Mass for Father John Peters, 76, of Tucson, Ariz., was celebrated at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer on Friday, June 6, 1997, at 10:30 a. m., with Archbishop Jerome Hanus serving as celebrant. Burial was at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Fairbank, IA. A Rosary was recited Thursday at 4 p.m. and a scripture service was held Thursday evening, both at St. Paul Church.

Father Peters died Saturday, May 3I, I997, in Tucson. Music for the funeral service was provided by Bonnie Kopriva, organist and the St. Paul Choir. Helen Van Steenhuyse served as organist for the scripture service.

Casket bearers were John Kvidera, Robert Podhajsky, Ellsworth Cizek, Donald Gates, Robert Kaufman and Dennis Manfull. Floral tributes were handled by Mr. and Mrs. Larry Nachazel, Barbara Novotny and Ann Beranek were in charge of Mass cards.

Father John Peters was born Oct. 23, 1920, at Fairbank, IA, the son of Frank W. and Catherine (McTaggart) Peters. He received his education at Fairbank and graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School in the Class of 1937. He then continued his education at Lucas College in Dubuque and St. Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was ordained a priest in December 1944.

Father Peters served as pastor of parishes in Waterloo, Manona, Harpers Ferry, Garber, Vinton, Dysart and Traer. In 1989 he retired from St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer and moved to make his home in Tucson, Ariz.

Surviving are three sisters, Catherine V. Peters of Tucson, Mrs. Ralph (Mary) Weber of Waterloo and Ellen Reising, also of Tucson.
