OBITUARY

Verda Fern Messerly was born at MechanicsviIle, Iowa, on December 16, 1906, the daughter of Fred C. and Sadie (Swarm) Fifield. Verda graduated from Wyoming, Iowa, High School in the class of 1924, and continued her education at Iowa State Normal College at Cedar Falls. Verda then taught country school before her marriage to Roger Messerly on August 31, 1928, at the Little Brown Church at Nashua.

Verda and Roger made their home in Cedar Falls and Waterloo until they moved to Buckingham in 1944, where they owned and operated the General Store and Post Office. Verda and Roger enjoyed spending their free time traveling and had visited all 60 states as well as Europe and the Holy Lands. After Roger's death on April 29, 1986, Verda continued to make her home in Buckingham, and remained active in the Geneseo United Methodist Church.

Other free moments were spent reading and enjoying sporting events, and she still maintained an active travel schedule. On Friday, April 10, 1992, Verda suddenly became ill at her home and her death came that day at the age of 86 years.

Verda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger; and one brother, Fred.

Verda is survived by her son, Roger (Bud) Messerly and his wife LaVonn of Marion; her daughter, Jean and her husband, Duane (Charlie) States of Roseville, Minnesota; four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
