OBITUARY

Roger L. Messerly was born February 14, 1905, at Benson, Iowa, son of Edward and Essie [Lawrence] Messerly. Roger received his education at Cedar Falls graduating in the class of 1925. He then began working at Rath Packing in Waterloo and on August 31, 1928, he married Verda Fifield at the LIttle Brown Church at Nashua.

Roger and Verda made their home In Waterloo and Cedar Falls until 1944, when they moved to Buckingham and owned and operated the general store and post office. In the early 60's they sold the store and Roger continued as postmaster until his retirement In 1972.

Roger and Verda continued to make their home in Buckingham and recently Roger was a patient at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo where he died Tuesday morning, April 29, 1986, at the age of 81 years.

He was a member of the Geneseo United Methodist Church and past secretary of the Conservation Board and in 1971 was Iowa Postmaster of the Year. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers and Is survived by his wife Verda of Buckingham; one son Roger [Bud] and his wife LaVonn of Marion; one daughter Jean States and her husband Duane of Rosevllle, Minn.; two brothers Francis ot Cedar Falls and Robert of Finchford; one sister Mrs. Edward [Dorothy] Waldorf of Hampton; as well as four grandchildren, Barbara, Gayl, David and Dana and nine great-grandchildren.
