OBITUARY

James Joe Kostlan was born at Traer, Iowa, on February 25, 1928, son of Joseph and Emma (Vochoska] Kostlan. Jim received his education at Traer High School, graduating in the Class of 1945, and continued his education at Coin Electrical School in Chicago. He returned home and farmed with his father.

On Febroary 25, 1950, he married Mary Neelans of Waterloo, Iowa. Jim and Mary farmed until 1966 when Jim became a full-time employee with the Iowa State Beer and Liquor Commission. He was manager of the Iowa State Liquor Store at Traer when his 23-year career ended with the Commission.

Free moments were spent by Jim and Mary participating in the Cedar Valley Chapter of the Polka Club of Iowa, of which they were charter members, and the P.O.L.K. of A. Jim was also an active member of the Traer Lions Club, serving as treasurer for the past several years. He was a member of the Ripley United Church of Christ. Jim's hobby was wood working and he was enjoying that hobby at his home when he was stricken with an apparent fatal heart attack on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1988, at the age of 59 years.

JIim was preceded in death by his parents and one Sister Winona. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Traer; one son, Douglas, of PIano, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Rich [Vicki] Nielsen, of Avoca, IA.; one brother, Marvin, of Buckingham; two sisters, Mrs. Mercedes Hoeppner of Hudson and Mrs. Marilyn Staveley of Traer, and his three grandchi1dren, Erin, Tiffany and Trent.
