Harold Higgins

A funeral service for Harold L. Higgins, 85, of Waterloo and formerly of Genesseo, was held Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Geneseo United Methodist Church, rural Buckingham. Burial was at the Geneseo Cemetery. He died Saturday, Oct. 12 (1991).

The Rev. Rudy Trusheim officiated at the funeral service. Mrs. Robert Pritchard provided organ music and Paul Lindeman was vocalist. Casket bearers were Marlin Thiel, Keith Darrow, Clark Mitchell, Greg Mixdorf, Mark Higgins, and Jack Nagel. On the flower committee were Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Adolphs.

Harold L. Higgins was born Aug. 1, 1906, to George and Gracia (Resseguie) Higgins, at Schaller, Iowa. He graduated from Terril High School and continued his education at Iowa State University.

Aug. 1, 1930, Harold was married to Margaret R. McElhinney and the couple lived in Stuart and Traer before moving to Geneseo Township in 1948. They were active in the community and promoted conservation practices. Margaret died in 1977. Harold farmed at Geneseo for over 40 years, until his recent retirement. In 1983, Harold married Susan Hansen, and the couple resided at Friendship Village in Waterloo.

Harold Higgins wrestled for Iowa State and recently was recognized as an Iowa State All-American NCAA Champion. He was a member of Geneseo United Methodist church, was a 50-year member of Hesperia Masonic Lodge, was a member of El Kahir Shrine, the EL Mecca Club and the Farm Bureau. He was past president of the Iowa Association of Soil Conservation District Commissioners and of the Geneseo School Board of Education.

He is survived by his wife, Susan; one son, Robert of Traer; two daughters, Mary Mixdorf of Iowa City and Sara Mitchell of Mount Pleasant; a sister, Gladys Henn of Terril, nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Overton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
