Clarence Hach

Clarence W. Hach, 81, of Evanston, Ill, and formerly of Clutier, died at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998. In recent months Clarence had resided at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer.

A graveside memorial service will be held Monday, Oct. 12, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Clutier Cemetery.

Clarence Hach was born Feb. 5, 1917, at Clutier, the son of James Hach and Frieda (Dose) Hach Waje. He received his education at Dysart, graduating from Dysart High School in 1934.

While attending high school in Dysart he was the Dysart correspondent for the Traer Star-Clipper.

He then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937 and in 1939 earned a Masters Degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He also did additional graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, Columbia University and Rutgers University.

His teaching positions were at Crystal Lake, Davenport, Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.; and Evanston Township High School in Evanston, Ill.

He also held summer appointments at the University of Minnesota, University of Missouri, Northwestern University, Chicago Teachers College South and at the University of Hawaii.

He was a member of many of the professional groups and held the position of present and chairman of several.

Mr Hach was awarded the Ford Foundation Fellowship, John Whitney Fellowship, was named Illinois Journalism Teacher of the Year in 1947 and again in 1974; he received the Pioneer Award and the Distinguished Service Medal.

He also was the author of many English and Journalism articles published in periodicals and co-authored several English and Journalism textbooks.

He was listed in Who’s Who in American Education and in the Directory of American Scholars.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brother Roy and Allwin Hach.

He is survived by two brothers, Robert Hach of Dysart and Merrill Hach of Cedar Falls.
