OBITUARY

Roger E. Sawyer, 85, of 186 Lakeview Dr., Mason City, IA, died Wednesday, September 23, 1999, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A memorial service was held Monday afternoon, Sept. 27, 1999, at Wayside Chapel, First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Douglas Anderson officiating. Inurement will be made in Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer, at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Roger E. Sawyer was born Aug. 13, 1914, in Traer, IA, a son of Louis and Nell (Tesmer) Sawyer. He graduataed from Traer High School with the Class of 1932.

He attended Iowa State College and graduated from Kansas City Radio School. Roger joined KGLO radio in 1937 and was named Chief Engineer in 1945.

On March 31, 1940, he was united in marriage to Delores E. Bangston at her parents' home in Goldfield, IA.

During his career at KGLO, television was introduced in 1954 and in 1958 a sister station, KEYC-TV, was built in Mankato, Minn.

Roger retired from KGLO in 1969 and has enjoyed trout fishing, golf, photography, amateur radio and a variety of gadgets. In his later years he enjoyed having coffee every morning with his friends at the Elks.

He was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity, the First United Methodist Church, the Mason City Country Club and a life member of BPOE #375 (Elks). He was a licensed amateur radio operator, WAXT for 63 years.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Surviving Roger are his wife, Delores Sawyer of Mason City; one son and his wife, Tom and Joan Sawyer of Clear Lake; two daughters and their husbands, Suzanne and Dr. Kent Gulden of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Kaye and Ken Steger of Pittsburg, Texas; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
