OBITUARY

Funeral services for Ruth M. Sands, 97, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Traer, were held at the Ripley United Church of Christ in Traer on Tuesday, July 18, 1989, at 10:30 am with the Rev. Dean Williams, pastor of the United Presbyteerian Church officiating. Burial was at West Union Cemetery, rural Traer. She died Saturday, July 15, 1989, at Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls.

Casket bearers were David Capoccioni, Jim Seeley, Rodger Knoop, Marc Powell, Karl Rinkleff and Charles Bartos. Organist was Irene Calderwood and floral tributes were handled by Jane Seeley and Linda Powell.

Ruth M. Sands was born November 17, 1891, east of Traer. She was the last daughter of the pioneer family of Robert and Sophia (Turnow) Powell, who came to Tama County in a covered wagon in 1870. She received her high school education in Traer, graduating in the class of 1909. Ruth attended Cedar Rapids business college and received a B.A. degree from the State University of Iowa in 1922, majoring in sociology. She worked on her master's degree at the State University of Iowa and also at the University of Chicago

Ruth served as an elementary school teacher, a secretary for Thomas and Thomas law firm in Traer and as a secretary for the history department at the State University of Iowa. She then became involved in social work in Chicago for the United Charities of Chicago and the University of Chicago.

In November of 1934 she was married to Daniel Sands and later moved to Sioux City, Iowa, where she was involved as a Travelers Aide for the USO during World War II.

Ruth retired to the family home at Traer in 1953 and ws an active member of the Ripley United Church of Christ and the ladies organization of that church. She was a former member of the Alpha Club and Garden Club. For the past three years she has been a resident of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.

Surviving are numerous nephews and nieces and several great and great-great nephews and nieces.
