OBITUARY

A Funeral Mass was held Saaturday, Oct. 24, at St. Paul Catholic Church, Traer for William G. Podhajsky, 93, of Traer. Burial was in the church cemetery. He died Wednesday evening, Oct. 21, 1992, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, where had been taken after becoming ill at Sunrise Hill Care Center.

Officiating at the funeral service were the Revs. Thomas Purtell and Jon Seda. Music was furnished by the St. Paul Choir. Active casket bearers were Steve Podhajsky, Tim Podhajsky, Chris Podhajsky, Jerry Podhajsky, Greg Podhajsky and Nick Podhajsky. Honorary casket bearers were Dick Martin, Bob Nielsen, Don Gates, William Talen, John Kvidera, Joe Podhajsky and T. R. McWhirter. Tending to Mass Cards were Sally Sevcik, Dorothy Pecenka and Bernadette Hlas and tending to the floral tributes were Mr. and Mrs. Rudy Wieck and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Seda.

William G. Podhajsky was born Dec. 15, 1898 in Carroll Township, son of James G. and Mary (Nachazel) Podhajsky.

Bill received his education in a country school in Perry Township, then began farming with his parents.

On Nov. 17, 1925, Bill married Mayme Valenta at Vining, Iowa and they made their home farming southwest of Traer until their retirement in Traer in 1954.

After retiring, Bill still enjoyed spending time on the farm, and was an active member of the Traer community. Bill served on the board of Directors of Farmers Savings Bank in Traer from 1954-1991, also serving as President. He was on the Board of Directors for the Farmers Elevator, Farmers Lumber Co. in Traer and Farmers Lumber in Garwin. He was an active member of St. Paul Catholic Church and was instrumental in the drive for their new church building.

Mayme died March 14, 1989, and bill continued to make his home at 500 Mowery Street until 1990, when he became a resident of Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mayme; one son, William R.; three sisters, Agenes Podhajsky, Mary Seda and Emma Dostal, a grandson and a granddaughter.

He is survived by two sons, Robert of Traer and Stan of Iowa City; three brothers, James A., Milo and Rudy, all of Traer; 12 grandchildrenb and four great-grandchidren.
Overton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
