OBITUARY

Funeral services for Jean W. Lyon, 85, of Traer, will be held Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, at 10 am at the United Presbyterian Church in Traer. The Rev. Rick Vesely will officiate and Mary Nelson will serve as organist. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Cedar Rapids, IA.

Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 pm, Wednesday, Jan. 27, at Overton Family Funeral Home in Traer, with the family present from 6-8 pm.

Mrs. Lyon died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo of a short illness.

Jean Wilson Lyon was born March 8, 1913, at Traer, the daughter of John R. and Nelle (Wilson) Currens. She attended Bakers Grove Country School and graduated from Traer High School in 1930. She continued her education at the University of Northern Iowa, where she received a two-year elementary certificate in 1932.

She taught school and then returned to UNI for her BA degree in 1936. Jean received her MA degree from the University of Iowa in 1944. Her post-graduate work was taken at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Northern Colorado.

On June 14, 1947, she was united in marriage to Clifford C. Lyon, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Lyon served as a principal for several years in the Cedar Rapids public shcool district and in later years taught art at Johnson Elementary School in Cedar Rapids.

In recent years, she returned to Traer to live and was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.

She was a member of PEO, DAR, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association and a local president of the National League of American Pen Women.

An active writer and author, Mrs. Lyon was a valued contributing writer of photo features for many trade publications. She was a co-author of four books in the Enchantment of South America Series published by Children's Press of Chicago; author and illustrator of Arts and Crafts Objects Children Can make For the Home and Decorating with Antiques and Collectibles.

Her work was recognized in Who's Who of Women, Two Thousand Women of Achievement and Who's Who of American Women.

Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband.

Jean is survived by one daughter, Janelle Betts and her husband, Rex of Traer; one son, Randolph W. and wife, Ruth Lyon of Dubuque; one brother, John R. (Randy) and Eleanor Currens of Waterloo and four grandchildren.
