OBITUARY

A Funeral Mass for Joseph B. Kucera, 88 of Traer was celebrated Monday, Feb. 24, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, rural Clutier with Father John Tilp as celebrant. Burial was in the church cemetery. A rosary was recited Sunday afternoon and a scripture service was held that evening, both at Overton Family Funeral Home in Traer.

Mr. Kucera died Feb. 20, 1997, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo after having suffered a stroke a couple of weeks earlier.

Music for the funeral service was provided by Catherine McLean, organist; John Svoboda, soloist and the church choir.

Casket bearers were Stanley Hlas, Ernest Kucera, Joe Kucera, John Kucera, Mark Kucera and Pete Wobeter. Floral tributes were handled by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wobeter and Mr. and Mrs. Norm Gorder.

In charge of Mass chards were Rose Kvidera and Mary Jane Rinkleff.

Joseph B. Kucera was born March 11, 1908, in rural Toledo the son of Anton and Anna (Zmolek) Kucera. He attended rural school in Howard Township and later graduated from Toledo High School in 1926.

On Nov. 25, 1941, he was united in marriage to Margaret Nachazel at St. Wenceslaus Church. The couple farmed and lived their entire married life east of Traer.

Joe was a master mcehanic for all the hemp processing facilities in the United States during WW II. He had over 50 patents including a hemp turner, flail manure spreader, Ford automobile trunk opener, corn dryer, high clearance sprayer and sub soiler.

He was one of the first farmers in the area to be involved with sustainable farming methods and had been involved with it for 30 years.

Joe was a 4-H leader for the Four Leafers and a member of the K.D. Lodge and Catholic Order of Foresters.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers, Phillip and Anton.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Traer; five daughters, Joanne Vlasak and Judy Thill, both of Waterloo; Nancy Schmitt of Columbus, Neb.; Bonnie Burgan of Midland; Mich and Elly Mack of Marshalltown; one son, Terry Kucera of Sergeant Bluff; 21 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother Frank Kucera of Toledo; and four sisters, Anna Hlas and Genieve Kucera, both of Clutier; Frances Wobeter of Tama and Mary Kucera of Garner.
