Funeral services for Roy H. Jacobsen, 83, of Voorhies were held Tuesday, June 1, 2000, at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck. The Rev. Randy McGrady-Beach officiated. Burial was in the Reinbeck Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Action Post #242, Reinbeck.

A memorial fund is being established.

Roy Jacobsen died of natural causes Friday morning, June 9, 2000, at Sunrise Hill Care & Rehab Center in Traer where he had been a patient since February.

Born Nov. 29, 1916, in Perry Township, Ia., Roy was the son of John and Dora (Heckt) Jacobsen. He grew up in the area of his birth and attended country school. He attended Traer High School and graduated with the Class of 1934.

On Oct. 30, 1940, he was united in marriage to Lucille Wacha of Toledo. The couple lived in Traer for a short time before moving to Voorhies in 1942 where Mr. Jacobsen managed the Voorhies Hardware & Lumber Company.

At the age of 27 Roy entered the United States Army and served his country during World War II. Upon returning home he purchased the business and the couple operated it until the early 1960s. After that, Roy kept busy helping area farmers; he had also driven truck for the Voorhies Grain Company and drove school bus.

Mr. Jacobsen was a member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ; the Oak Leaf Country Club, Reinbeck; the American Legion Action Post #242, Reinbeck; the Disabled American Veterans and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Ewoldt and a brother in childhood.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille of Voorhies; two sons, Robert and his wife JoAnn Jacobsen of Ramona, Calif., and James and his wife Carole Jacobsen of Bellevue, Ia.; a sister, LaVina Ewoldt of Traer, Ia.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Hand Funeral Home Reinbeck was in charge of arrangements.
