OBITUARY

Funeral services for Richard Wendell Crawford, 91, of Traer, were held Friday, Sept. 2, 1994, at the United Presbyterian Church in Traer with burial in Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer. Wendell died Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo after becoming ill earlier in the day at his home.

The Rev. Rick Vesely officiated at the service with Beulah Whannel serving as organist and Jean Staker, vocalist. Casket bearers were Rick Crawford, Kirk Crawford, Ryan Hook, Steve Hook, Robert Crawford and Donald Crawford. Flower committee members were Mr. and Mrs. Jack Chase, Virginia West and Hazel Joens.

Wendell was born April 10, 1903, on a farm south of Traer, Iowa, a son of John and Eliza beth "Lizzy" (Green) Crawford. As a young boy Wendell moved to Texas with his family where he started school and later returned to Traer where he graduated from Traer High School in the Class of 1920.

He began working as a hired man for area farmers and on March 18, 1924, he was married to Pearl Harrison at Amity Presbyterian Church. Pearl and Wendell made their home in Traer where he was employed as a butter maker and later became manager for the Traer Creamery for 30 years. Following his retirement he worked for Erickson Funeral Home in Traer.

Pearl's death came in October of 1962, and on Sept. 4, 1964, Wendell was married to Pauline Raske at Albany, MO.

Wendell was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder; a member of the Lions Club and the Elks and Eagle Lodges.

Preceding him in death in addition to his parents and first wife, Pearl, were one brother and one sister.

Surviving are his wife, Pauline; two sons, Richard of Dysart and Dan of Des Moines; one daughter, Mrs. Roger (Joan) Rodimaker of Traer; one-stepson, the Rev. John Raske of Kansas City, MO; one step-daughter, Mrs. John (Millie) Mumm of Hudson; two brothers, William of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Robert of Costa Mesa, Calif; two sisters, Pearl Legg of Cedar Falls and Eva Staveley of Traer; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

Overton Family Funeral Homes-Traer was in charge of arrangements.
