OBITUARY

Funeral services for Velaa F. Claussen, 102, of Sunrise Hill Care & Rehab Center, and formerly of Gladbrook were held Saturday morning, Jan. 29, 2000, at the United Methodist Church in Gladbrook with burial following in Crystal Cemetery, rural Toledo.

She died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at the care center.

The service was officiated by the Rev. Doresa Collogan. Music was provided by Anita Elmore, organist; Jean Staker and Gloria Whisner, vocalists.

Casket bearers were Irvin Van Haaften, Robert Nielsen, Steve Fevold, Craig Earley, Gene Staker and Larry Bern.

Velma Freda Claussen was born Nov. 29, 1897, in Crystal Township, Tama County, IA the daughter of Hans and Caroline Claussen.

She attended Crystal No. 3 and graduated from the eighth grade. After moving to Gladbrook with her parents, she bacame a housekeeper for her brothers for several years.

She later moved to Marshalltown where she was employed as a maid in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fisher, the owner of the Fisher-Governor Plant. When the Fishers retired and moved from the community, Neal Chadderson took over the management of the plant and she worked for him.

Velma then became a cook in the S.S. Kresge store in Marshalltown and remained there for 25 years until her retirement.

For a time Velma attended Central Iowa Business College in Marshalltown.

In her retirement, she volunteered at the Veterans Home in Marshalltown and at the gift shop in the former Deaconess Hospital.

Velma was a member of the Methodist Church of Gladbrook and was active in the Methodist Church in Marshalltown where she was a member of the Women's Association. She was also a member of the Rebekahs, the Professional Business Women's Associataion and the American Legion Auxiliary of Gladbrook.
She was known for her fine cooking and was recognized as a Centenarian by the Governor's office.

In 1996 Velma became a resident of Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer.

Preceding here in death were her parents; six sisters, Catherine Ehrig, Matilda McGowan, Amelia Staker, Luella Rohweder, Hilda Claussen and Lydia Claussen and three brothers, Edward, Fred and John.

Velma is survived by five nieces and five nephews; Lois Bern, Dorothy McGowan, Phyllis Earley, Evelyn Ehrig, Marilyn Thomas, Harold Ehrig, Elmer Ehrig, Burdell Staker, Dwayne Rohweder and Dean Rohweder.

Overton Family Funeral Home-Traer was in charge of arrangements.
