OBITUARY

Mercedes C. Schrier was born January 23, 1926 in Warren County near the community of Rosemont, Iowa, the daughter of John and Ella (Dittmer) Rottinghaus. At an early age she moved with her family to Gilbertville, Iowa where she attended school.

On September 30, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert E. Schrier at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Gilbertville. Mercedes and Robert made their home farming all their married life north of Traer.

More recently she had been a patient at the Covenanat Medical Center in Waterloo where her death came on Thursday, April 27, 2000 at the age of 74 years.

In her free moments she enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, reading, and gardening. She was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Parish (Blessing), Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters, Traer American Legion Auxiliary, Buckingham Harmony Homemakers and Tama County Tracers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Firmin and Roderick, one sister, Alice and one grandson, Adam Otting. She is survived by her husband Robert E., two sons and their wives, William M. and Kathy Schrier of Seattle, Washington, John J. and Martha Schrier of Traer, four daughters and their husbands, Barbara and Ronald Besch of Bellvue, Iowa, Jane and Steve Kock of Carroll, Iowa, Mary and Terrence Otting of Columbus, Ohio and Anne and Tom Curley of Waunakee, Wisconsin, three brothers, Gilbert Rottinghaus of La Porte City, Iowa, Robert Rottinghaus of Jesup, Iowa and Alvin Rottinghaus of Gilbertville and 13 grandchildren.
