Matie CHIZEK

Funeral services for Matie H. CHIZEK, 86, of Traer, were held Friday, April 2 at the Traer United Methodist Church. Burial was at Buckingham Cemetery, rural Traer. She died Tuesday, March 30, 1993, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, after suffering from ill health in recent months.

The Rev. Martha Anderson officiated at the funeral service, and Judy Mason was organist. Vocal music was furnished by Wayne Dunlavey. Casket bearers were Kevin Lassen, Roger Loeffler, Travis Loeffler, Rene Hatton, John HARMSEN and Jon Truedsale. Tending to floral tributes were Mr. and Mrs. Donald Vokoun.

Matie H. CHIZECK was born Dec. 31, 1906, in Crystal Township, the daughter of Will and Emma (ARP) HARMSEN. She received her education in country school in Crystal Township, and graduated from Garwin Community School in 1924.

On July 17, 1924, Matie was united in marriage to Edward CHIZEK, and the couple made their home in Gladbrook, where they operated a restaurant for a time. They then moved to Garwin where they operated a restaurant before moving to Toledo. A farm south of Traer was their home until 1944, when they moved into Traer, where Matie worked in food service for the school and area restaurants, Edward died Oct. 29, 1963, and Matie continued to make her home in Traer.

Matie was a member of the United Methodist Church and Martha Circle; Royal Neighbors and various card clubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; two brothers, Alfred and Clarence; and one sister, Mabel.

She is survived by one son, Donnie D. of Ft. dodge; one daughter, Mrs. Merlin (Gerene) LASSEN of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Overton Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
